Standing proudly along the eastern shoreline of Sanibel Island, the Point Ybel Lighthouse is one of Southwest Flordia’s most historic and recognizble landmarks. Built to guide mariners through the shallow waters of San Carlos Bay, Pine Island Sound, and the Gulf, this lighthouse has watched over Sanibel for generations.
The History of Point Ybel Lighthouse
For years, islanders, (and there were not many) petitioned to the US government to have a lighthouse erected on the east end of Sanibel warning seaferers of the shallow waters surrounding the island. In the 1800’s the area was a shipping thoroughfare for cattle coming and going from Cuba to the Punta Rassa landing. The ship wrecks were numerous, leaving sailors stranded for weeks and months until another ship sailed through. After many years of requesting, the approval came. The lighthouse was pre-built in New England, then shipped down to Sanibel. Ironically, the ship carrying the lighthouse sank just off the east end. Divers were summonded from Key West. After weeks of diving to retrieve the lighthouse, all but three pieces were found.
The Point Ybel Ligthouse was first illuminated in 1884, making it one of the oldest lighthouses on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Constructed of iron and standing approxmately 98 feet tall, with 150 steps, it was designed to withstand coastal weather while providing a viatal navigational beacon for vessels traveling the regions waters.
The lighthouse was named for Jose Ybel, a Spanish fisherman who settled in the area in the early 1800’s. During its early years, lighthouse keepers and their families lived on site, tending the light, raising families, farming and ensuring safe passage for ships navigating the shallow bays and barrier islands of Southwest Florida.
A Landmark Best Seen from the Water
While many visitors explore the lighthouse grounds on land, one of the most memorable ways to experience the Point Ybel Lighthouse is from the water. Viewed from San Carlos Bay, the lighthouse rises above the mangroves and shoreline, offering a stunning perspective that mirros what early mariners once saw.
