FIRST MATE THOMAS JOINS THE “J” CLUB

The “J” Club is reserved for a very special group – eagle-eyed shellers who discover the prized and elusive Junonia shell. For anyone who has searched fro one, you know this is no small feat.

Shelling almost daily, First Mate Thomas has been on the hunt for several years.

Tide after tide, season after season, his eyes stayed trained on the shoreline, patiently waiting for the right moment. And then, one unforgettable evening, it finally happened.

During a crazy high tide, with cold winds blowing and accompanied by his twin brother, Thomas spotted something extraordinary. As the surf surged forward and began rolling back out to sea he saw the unmistakable pattern. Without hesitation, Thomas moved quickly reaching into the water and grabbing the Junonia just as it tried to slip away.

The Junonia is highly prized by collectors, a rarity, because they live offshore in tropical deep waters about 80 miles offshore, and are rarely found intact on the beach from the journey to shore.

The moment was the result of determination, knowledge, and a sharp eye – qualities we admire deeply. These same traits are what make Thomas such an incredible first mate and what help ensure that every guest aboard our cruises enjoys a fun, educational and professional experience.
